Guests step on the piazza through gibb (sometimes spelled gib, and pronounced “jib”) doors. These doors, original to the home, are made from 8 foot windows that lift above and door bottoms – similar to a Dutch doorway – that are disguised as part of the wall, but open outward to the veranda. While many assume the name of the inn comes from the famous character Rhett Butler in the quintessential Southern film “Gone with the Wind”, the opposite is actually true. Margaret Mitchell, author of “Gone With the Wind”, named the character after the prominent Rhetts of Beaufort and Charleston and the Butlers of Atlanta. Thomas Smith Rhett and his wife Caroline Barnwell (one of the South’s most prominent families – a county in S. C. is named for them) Rhett raised their children under the main house’s roof, and lived here until the Civil War.
Our Cottages
It is significant as the home of Thomas Moore Rhett and his wife, Caroline Barnwell, who were early pioneers in South Carolina in the 1800s. The Inn is in the Point neighborhood, which is part of the Beaufort Historic District. Today, the Rhett House Inn serves as a Four Diamond bed and breakfast Inn. Breakfast was great, they don’t skimp on the meal at all. Experience our world-renowned Southern breakfast, crafted by Chef Beverly, on our historic veranda or intimate dining room, featuring locally sourced produce and exceptional flavors. In 1940, the house was sold to media personality John Nesbitt, who had Wright add a pool on the north terrace, a billiard room on the ground floor, and a heating system.
Guest Cottages
Restoration work was completed in 2007 at a cost of nearly US$6.4 million.[17] No announcement was made regarding access by the public and the Ennis House remains closed to public visitors. This upper level Cottage room features a king bed, private porch, private entrance, gas fireplace and a private bath with jetted tub and separate shower. We wanted a typical old southern style house and it was perfect. A film documenting the house, called The Ennis House, was shot in hi definition digital 3D by film maker Tom Koester. An early cut of the film premiered at the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy Conference in Chicago, October 2007, but has had few public showings.
How much does it cost to stay at Rhett House?
It later became a school, then dormitory-style housing for seminary students. In 1996, Rhett House Inn owners Steve and Marianne Harrison bought the two-story building and renovated it into 7 additional guest rooms, all with fireplaces, whirlpool baths and separate showers. The location was perfect- within walking distance to Bay Street and all we wanted to see in Beaufort.

Breakfast was running late by 45 minutes and people came in after us ordered the same got theirs and left before we were served. One gentleman was complaining about such and was also served before us, even though he had come in after us. A cartoon representation is featured in South Park as the base of a Chinese gang in the episode "Wing", satirizing the popular association of the Ennis House with criminal and/or Asian characters in films. Ennis House is also represented in cartoon series "The Venture Bros." as super villain, The Monarch's house in season 4. In August 2005, the house was returned to its original name, and the Trust for Preservation of Cultural Heritage was renamed the Ennis House Foundation.
Even before its completion the Ennis House was marked by structural instability. Concrete blocks had cracked and lower sections of the walls buckled under tension. The use of decomposed granite from the site to color the textile blocks introduced natural impurities to the concrete mix, and combined with air pollution caused premature decay. Attempts to apply a protective coating caused additional problems. It was during the long ownership by the Foundation from 1980 to 2011 that the house was used as a filming location, establishing it as one of the most famous houses in Los Angeles. The Rhett House Inn, is a historic Inn at 1009 Craven Street, Beaufort, South Carolina.
The Inn was beautiful and our room was very roomy and comfortable. It was so nice to have a delicious breakfast on the porch. We will definitely stay there again when we return to Beaufort. In 2006 a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant was issued, as well as a US$4.5 million construction loan through First Republic Bank, which restarted restoration efforts. The project included a new structural support system, restoration or replacement of damaged blocks, restoration of windows, and a new roof.
In the 1980’s, when the Harrisons were just starting the inn – after successful careers in the New York fashion industry, Room 10 was their bedroom while they operated the other five rooms. About 12 years ago they built a home at the back of the inn that blends perfectly with the rest of the neighborhood with its red tin roof. Seven of the Inn’s rooms are found in the Cottage just across the street from the back of the property. This building, was built in 1846 as a store for freed slaves to buy and sell goods.
